Extreme Heat - AMBER Weather Warning

Dear Parents/Carers,

The Met Office has extended an amber extreme heat warning for Sunday 17 July, Monday 18 July and Tuesday 19 July, as temperatures will build this weekend and early next week for much of England and Wales. Temperatures will be around 32°C within the warning area including Stockport, with Monday and Tuesday most likely to see temperatures around this level.

It is not recommended that we close school due to the extreme heat however it is recommended that we put sensible measures in place to keep everyone safe. I have made the decision to put the following measures in place for next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

PE lessons – all PE lessons will be cancelled on Monday, Tuesday and possible Wednesday. Children should wear uniform as specified below, rather than PE kits if these are their PE days.
(Y6 Sale Sharks Rugby will only conduct the classroom sessions – not the practical sessions outside)

Uniform – All children are still to wear their normal school polo shirt on top but something loose and comfortable on their bottom half. This can be shorts, skirt or lightweight trousers of your choice. They should be light in colour. School summer dresses can also be worn.

Hats – Can all children please bring a named sun hat into school to wear outside.

Sun cream – Can all parents make ensure their child has sun cream applied before they come to school.

Water bottle – Can all children please bring in a water bottle that can be refilled throughout the day to ensure your child remains hydrated. Staff will be actively encouraging children to drink more during this hot period. Children cannot control their body temperature as efficiently as adults during hot weather because they do not sweat as much and so can be at risk of ill-health from heat. The main risk from heat is dehydration (not having enough water in the body).

Playtime/LunchtimeOutside play will be reduced during the extreme heat. Children will be outside for shorter periods and will not have the opportunity to take part in vigorous physical activity. Children will be encouraged to stay in the shade as much as possible.

If your child has an underlying health condition, such as asthma, please double check that they have their medication in school.

Kind regards
